Around 80% of the population has to deal with acne at some time. New technology Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) can get to the cause of acne infection and inflammation; help prevent the development of acne cysts, papules, nodules, pustules and the eventual scarring. The non-invasive treatment of IPL, wide spectrum light waves from the handpiece penetrates the skin into the epidermis. Utilizing both light and heat energy the light penetrates the skin to treat inflammatory acne lesions and the sebaceous glands (oil glands).
During hormonal changes, the sebaceous gland can produce up to 10 times that of normal production. This in its self can then trap bacteria within the hair follicle and acne is created. When the special spectrum light of the (yellow) is applied the por-phyrins absorb the light and release singlet oxygen. This singlet oxygen destroys the acne bacteria, the acne will start to heal and the skin will clear and less likely have a reformation of acne lesions.
IPL does not only destroy Propionibacterium, which grows in the acne it also shrinks the overactive oil glands that cause the blockage in the hair follicle. Heat energy, along with the green-yellow pulsed light, is used to create a lasting effect on the affected area without harming the surrounding skin tissues IPL treatments prevent scarring, reduce the number of painful lesions, limit the acne disease duration, and minimize stress and embarrassment associated with the acne condition.
Topical skincare products, which can help with Acne:
The Jessner’s Peel is a light to medium peel, the depth of which is controlled by the amount of time you leave it on your skin and the number of layers you use. This is a very safe peel and is suitable for all skin types, especially those with oily or acne-prone skin. Some darker skin tones, particularly African American run a small risk of post peel hypo-pigmentation. As with all products, a patch test is recommended to see how your skin reacts. Of all the peels, the Jessner’s peel has the best track record for darkly pigmented skin peels. This peel contains the following active ingredients: Salicylic acid, Resorcinol, and Lactic Acid.
Salicylic Acid is a Beta Hydroxy Acid and is the only oil soluble acid used in skin care. This makes it particularly suited to acne prone skin and oily skin types. Salicylic acid helps dissolve the dirt, sebum, and debris in your pores that cause blackheads, enlarged pores, and acne outbreaks. It also helps reduce oil production and provides gentle exfoliation. Because it is closely related to Aspirin, there is a small chance of allergic reaction if you have an Aspirin allergy and you should choose a different peel.
Lactic Acid is an Alpha Hydroxy acid that helps encourage cell turnover and stimulates collagen formation while helping to smooth and soften the skin.
Resorcinol is an effective exfoliator that helps loosen the damaged skin layers to expose the new fresh skin beneath while also stimulating collagen to form.
Comedonal (non-inflammatory) acne: containing such ingredients as triclosan, salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide, azelaic acid, retinoids, topical can be effective for people with mild acne and are widely available.
Mild papulo-pustular (inflammatory) acne: benzoyl peroxide or topical retinoids, topical antibiotics (such as erythromycin).
Moderate inflammatory acne: benzoyl peroxide or topical retinoids combined with oral antibiotics (tetracyclines). Isotretinoin is an option.
Severe inflammatory acne, nodular acne, acne resistant to the above treatments: isotretinoin, or contraceptive pills with cyproterone for females with virilization or drospirenone.
