It is not just a passing trend! Healthy eating includes adding nutrient powerhouses and foods that are filled with all the good stuff our bodies crave. One of the best ways to do that is by adding superfoods to our meals. Even though these foods have existed for decades, it has been until recently that nutritionists and other health professionals started promoting the consumption of superfoods on a daily basis. You might be surprised when it comes to labeling a food as a ”super” one because some regular fruits and common foods are considered superfoods. Today, we share with you why some common fruits like tomatoes, blueberries, and pomegranate also fall under the superfoods list.

Even though people consider it a vegetable, this fruit contains alpha and beta-carotene, ascorbic acid (Vitamin C), fiber, lutein, potassium, and Lycopene. Lycopene is an amazing antioxidant not commonly found in other foods. Scientific findings have concluded that Lycopene can protect the skin against UV rays, prevent certain cancers and lower cholesterol. Tomatoes also contain Vitamins A, K, B1, B2, B3, B5, and B6. All these nutrients also contribute to lowering blood pressure, lowering glucose levels, supporting healthy skin and heart health.

Blueberries are full of phytonutrients that help fight free radicals and that’s why it’s no surprise it has been ranked as number one in antioxidant activity by the US Department of Agriculture. Antioxidants are proven to help slow down the aging process and also prevent the formation of wrinkles and fine lines. Blueberries also contain Ascorbic Acid, Carotenoids, Fiber, Folate, Salicylic Acid and Vitamin E. These nutrients also make blueberries an anti-cancer agent.
